Relying on Volunteers to help make the fundraising ‘Ask’

We know people give to people they know and trust, who are promoting or involved with a worthwhile cause!  But how often do we hear, ‘I am happy and willing to help out but I won’t ask for money’ or I’m not good at asking for money’.
There is of course, a major role to be played by the right volunteers and I am a great believer in nurturing our key players to show an example.  With our fundraising campaigns, I accept too, that many or even most of our volunteers will be uncomfortable and not good at ASKING, so as a Development Director, especially in the UK & Europe, we must take the lead. This is likely to involve training our volunteers.
Our volunteers can be vital to our programme in other ways, such as providing introductions, recommendations, advice, hosting small gatherings and joining us on solicitation meetings. A Development Director will be effective operating alone on some occasions, but with the high turnover in a still relatively young and immature profession, the value of volunteer support and leadership cannot be underestimated.
