The Head’s Role in Development - UK Boarding School

The Head’s Role in Development

I’ve been involved over the past year or so with an exceptional and traditional UK boarding school that has an impressive Foundation supporting a number of very talented pupils. But not all has been perfect and the potential has been limited until now!
Over recent years, the School’s leadership did not ‘get behind’ the development function and several Heads did not take the lead to help secure major donations. My recent involvement has seen a change in thinking and approach, 2with the Head promoting the Foundation and the wonderful examples of pupils having opportunities that would otherwise not have been possible.  At every opportunity, the importance of the Foundation is promoted and donors are coming forth to support the School’s ethos and vision.
The Head’s role is critical. Potential donors want to know the Head, the vision and want to be sure that ‘their’ school is performing well.
Over the past decade, the school I refer to was doing OK with little input to Development from the Heads but now there is greater awareness both internally and externally and the School is successfully reaching out to its community.
