The School Staff Room: Friend or Foe to the Development Office?

I think we all know the answer to this… but how important is the staff body to development and how important is it that the Development Director be fully integrated to the staff body?
A few years ago, as a new arrival to a school, I was courteously invited to join the ‘Common Room’ on the first morning and was introduced to everyone as, “For those of you who remember, we had a Development Director some years ago and he was a disaster!  Well I’m pleased to say we have another one!”
Not exactly off to a flying start I thought, but over a number of months, it was important for me to integrate with the staff from both a work and social perspective, to gain their loyalty, interest and support.  In turn, I was able to support their specific areas with fundraising initiatives that helped individual departments.
I was able to gain financial support for the Annual Fund from some long serving members and found that those who held friendships with former pupils became an invaluable resource to the Development Office.  Alumni events benefited from current and former staff in attendance and there was a happy buzz about what the Development Office was achieving.
